Middleham Castle was the childhood home of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who grew up to reign as King Richard III from 1483 to 1485. It's easy to imagine the young lad roaming the low hills and moors around here, at the eastern end of Wensleydale. This walk explores those uplands, passing the original motte and bailey castle that predates the modern-day remains, and flits between the rivers Cover and Ure, with a pause at a fine pub in the village of Wensley. You'll also explore the sweeping gallops on Middleham Low Moor and visit the tranquil waters of Pinker's Pond. Couple it with a visit to the fascinating ruins of Middleham Castle to hear Richard's story in full (English Heritage; charges apply.)
