NATURAL AMBIENCE OF JERVAULX ABBEY

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

Jervaulx Abbey is located in East Witton, 14 miles north-west of the city of Ripon, was one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire, dedicated to St Mary in 1156. It is a Grade I listed building. The place name Jervaulx is first attested in 1145, where it appears as Jorvalle.

Jervaulx Abbey’s dramatic, yet tranquil ambience has won the hearts of many of its visitors. The Tearooms opened in 1994 and are run by the same family, who pride themselves on locally sourced and homemade delights.

The abbey was plundered and pillaged during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the now stands as an enchanting, charming and atmospheric ruin where you are free to explore. Wild flowers, shrubs and trees are allowed to flourish in many of its nooks and crannies.
